April 2010

Dear MS-ians,

It’s been another whirlwind 3 months, hence you are hearing from us again!   MS-ICTTL e-newsletter brings you bite-size information so you continue to be aware of what’s out there.  Because we know… that you are BUSY working hard for the students!

What’s Exciting?!

(1) Wolfram Alpha

If you haven’t discovered this website, then do try it! You will sure love it!
(URL: http://www.wolframalpha.com/)

Very easy to use. Tell your students about it. Join Mr Chee Lim Cheung and like-minded staff in their quest to incorporate it into lessons.

Simply type the question:

Answer is immediate!

And you can even choose to “show steps”! Ain’t it cool?!

What’s even more amazing is… it is more than just Math! It answers Physics, Finance, Geography and even questions on Nutrition!

(2) Heard of Cloud Computing?

Want your resources to be located in the “clouds” so you can access anywhere and everywhere? Want to know more in plain English?  Watch this entertaining 3-minute video - http://www.commoncraft.com/cloud-computing-video

Want to know the issues and how it can be incorporated into T&L? A FREE E-BOOK is available! It talks about higher education in the age of cloud computing. (http://www.educause.edu/thetowerandthecloud)

(3) Dance the Math Dance and Rap the Quadratic Rap!

Show these to your students! Inspire their creativity and love for Math!

Have you ever thought that you can create a dance using what you learnt in Math? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNPXUWsMdIo

Have you ever thought that you can rap the quadratics? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBtUetKJzOU

What's New?!

1) Basic Math Notes

The lecture notes for the common Basic Math module has been added to the list of resources. I suggest that EM1 MCs link these to their sites too as supplementary resources.

(2) Common Textbook for Engineering Math 1

The lecture notes have been corrected as much as possible and updated in MS Resources last week. MCs who have linked them do not have to worry as the updating do not affect the links. If you spot any new errors, please inform Ping Yeun.

(3) Linking BB Module-site to MIKE Students’ Portal?

After hearing Yati of AP spoke about MIKE, are you wondering how you can link your BB module-site to MIKE? Good news is the process is automatic! The catch is, you must name the folders in your BB module-site according to what is prescribed by EDU. i.e. “Announcements”, “Staff Information”, “Module Information”, “Learning Resources” and “Library Resources”. Any other folders created not named according to the above cannot be seen in MIKE.
